Portal Crane Manufacturers

Tailored heavy-duty lifting cranes engineered for moving substantial loads over wide areas. The ideal solution when building support structures are unavailable.

Robust Free-Standing Lifting Power

Portal cranes are characterised by their massive, rigid “gate-like” frames that straddle operational areas. By utilising vertical legs that run on ground-level rails, they eliminate the need for extensive structural building supports.

With decades of experience in the lifting industry, our design team uses the latest computerised technology to tailor every portal crane to the task at hand. They are predominantly utilised in large outdoor settings such as ports, shipyards, stockyards, and construction sites to handle massive capacities safely.

For similar heavy-duty freestanding lifting applications, we also manufacture bespoke gantry cranes and goliath cranes tailored to demanding industrial environments.

Portal Crane Variants

These systems are defined by how the crane is supported and travels across your site.

Full Portal (Goliath)

The bridge is supported by two rigid legs running on parallel rails mounted flush with the ground. Fully self-sufficient, this configuration maximises lifting area and stability, making it ideal for heavy-duty lifting in large outdoor stockyards.

Semi-Portal

A space-saving hybrid design where the bridge is supported by one leg on a ground-level rail, while the other side runs along an elevated high-level rail attached to a building structure. Excellent for getting more from available space.

Cantilever Extensions

Many designs feature overhanging beams that allow the lifting trolley to extend beyond the rail centres. This maximises the working area, making it highly effective for loading and unloading outside the track boundaries.

Specialist Handling

Beyond standard hooks, portal cranes can be equipped as Bulk Handling systems with grabs/buckets for loose cargo, or as Rail-Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes for high-precision container yard operations.

Safety & Operational Integrity

Stringent safety regulations and advanced engineering prevent structural failure, tipping, and injury during operation.

Load Management & Control

Systems integrate advanced weighing technology to ensure operators strictly adhere to Rated Capacity limits. Modern control systems also feature anti-sway technology and regenerative braking to increase precision and provide substantial energy savings.

Statutory Maintenance

Given their massive capacities, regular and thorough inspections (such as LOLER mandates) are required for all critical components including ropes, hooks, brakes, and electrical systems to guarantee a lasting service life. We also provide specialist portal crane repairs and maintenance services to help ensure continued safe operation, compliance, and long-term reliability.
